This stay at Hengshan Garden Hotel Shanghai was originally only for the garden landscape of Hengshan Road. Unexpectedly, after two days of staying, what surprised me the most was not the afternoon tea in the garden, but the recreational facilities hidden throughout the hotel - completely breaking my stereotype of old-fashioned hotels with outdated facilities and fully enhancing the comfort of the leisure experience.
The hotel's indoor swimming pool is the first one to punch in. It is located on the first floor of the recreation area. There are layers of green plants outside the landing window, which makes swimming feel like walking through the urban oasis. The water quality is so clear that the blue line at the bottom of the pool can be seen. The water temperature is maintained at around 28 degrees Celsius all year round, and the newly entered Shanghai sewage does not feel cold at all. The rest area by the pool is covered with soft velvet lounge chairs. When you're tired from swimming, you can lean on them and easily get warm water handed over by the staff. Even the towels are pre baked to keep you warm, and every detail is thoughtful. The most rare thing is that there are very few people here. I only met two or three guests on weekend afternoons, so I didn't have to rush for the swimming lane like a chain hotel in the city. I swam leisurely for 1000 meters, and even the leg soreness accumulated from strolling on Hengshan Road was relieved by half.
Next to the swimming pool is a matching fitness club, equipped with professional imported equipment ranging from treadmills, elliptical machines to strength training stands. The spacing between each piece of equipment is wide, so there is no sense of crowding or discomfort. The large mirror of the gym is facing the garden outside the window. When you run, you can see the shadow of wutong trees on the lawn. It's easier to insist too much than moving against the boring white wall. Free drinking water and sweat towels are also provided in the corner, so you don't have to run back to your room to replenish water after finishing a set, which is too friendly for guests who want to move around temporarily.
To my surprise, Hengshan Garden Hotel Shanghai also hides many niche recreational experiences. A separate tea ceremony experience room has been set up in the corner of the leisure area, where you can experience the full set of Chinese tea ceremony by making an appointment in advance. Outside the window, facing the water scenery of the garden, you can cook a pot of local Longjing tea. When the tea smoke rises, even the bird songs outside the window can be heard very clearly. The hotel also provides a free garden guide manual. Strolling along the exclusive path of nearly 10000 square meters of gardens, you can find many hidden Easter eggs in the Chinese and Western scenery, such as the secret flower border by the Western lawn and the century old vine next to the Chinese pavilion, which is much more interesting than wandering around alone.
The most considerate thing is that almost all of these recreational facilities are open to guests for free, and they can leisurely soak for most of the day without paying extra experience fees. On the second day of my stay, I even felt that there was no need to rush to scenic spots. Soaking in the pool, practicing equipment, and drinking a pot of tea in the hotel was the most comfortable way to open Hengshan Road. This time, I didn't choose a cluster of online red hotels in Shanghai, but plunged into the shade of wutong in Hengfu Style District and stayed in Hengshan Garden Hotel Shanghai. Stepping out of Hengshan Road subway station, walking slowly along the tree lined avenue with the fragrance of osmanthus for 5 minutes, looking up, you can see the hotel gate hidden in the old villa community, even wrapped in the unique relaxation of old Shanghai in the wind.
The most surprising thing was the nearly 10000 square meter private garden that I stumbled upon upon upon upon entering. Half of it was a Western style lawn covered in tender grass, and the other half was a Chinese style garden hidden with small bridges and flowing water. The combination of Chinese and Western scenery was completely harmonious. I deliberately walked around the garden in the afternoon. The shadow of wutong leaves fell on the pavilion on the water. Several aunts and children were playing in the small world beside the lawn. People beside me slowly laid out the afternoon tea plates, and even time slowed down. Later on, I found out that this garden was rare to see in the city center, with a peaceful atmosphere amidst the hustle and bustle. I never imagined that just a few steps away was the bustling Hengshan Road.
The ordinary room type I lived in was more spacious than expected, with a large solid wood desk placed by the window, just enough for me to spread out my notebook and write a travel diary. The most attention to detail is the soap in the spare parts, which is warm and not tight to use. Later, I noticed from the reviews that many returning customers are looking for it. The sound insulation in the room is very solid. After closing the window, the sound of cars, water, horses, and dragons on Hengshan Road outside becomes a very light background sound, making it particularly peaceful to sleep at night.
The hotel's restaurant exceeded expectations completely. The Baihuayuan Chinese restaurant on the second floor blends traditional Cantonese cuisine and local dishes perfectly, with tender and tender eel paste that melts in the mouth. Even the dishes are presented with an elegant feel of old Shanghai. The White Magnolia Cafe on the fourth floor is close to the panoramic french window. Looking up, I can see the layers of wutong leaves outside the window. I had a breakfast here. There are a wide range of Chinese and western products. The chef's freshly cooked small Wonton is so fresh that even the soup is drunk. The Blue Asia Bar is hidden on one side of the lobby, with green plants spreading out around the seats. Sitting for half an hour with a special cocktail, it feels like hiding in a small tropical jungle in the city.
The geographical location is also a popular destination for strolling around Shanghai. It takes only a few minutes to walk to Wukang Building and Anfu Road, and then take a turn to enter the old western-style houses in the Hengfu style area. The next morning, I walked slowly along Hengshan Road, strolling through cafes, old bookstores and boutiques one by one. I didn't have to catch a taxi on the subway. I could experience the architectural aesthetics of the street by stepping on wutong leaves. The hotel's gym and indoor swimming pool are clean and spacious. After a day of browsing, I came back and swam for half an hour, feeling completely exhausted.
The biggest feeling after staying for two nights is that Hengshan Garden Hotel Shanghai did not deliberately create a sense of internet fame, but blended the elegance of old Shanghai with the comfort of modern accommodation. Next time I come back to Shanghai, I will definitely come back and steal a few days of leisurely time in the shade of wutong.
